DOLLAR GENERAL REPORTS INCREASED AUGUST SALES


GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. – September 4, 2003 – Dollar General Corporation (NYSE: DG) today reported total retail sales for the August four-week period ended August 29, 2003, equaled $514.7 million compared with $454.7 million last year, an increase of 13.2 percent.  Same-store sales for the August period increased 4.5 percent compared with a 6.3 percent increase in the prior year August period.  The average customer purchase in August was approximately $8.43 compared to $8.34 in the same period last year.  Customer transactions in same-stores increased approximately 3.8 percent.

Departments reporting the strongest same-store percentage sales increases for August include the shoe department, the domestics department, and the hardware, toys and stationery department.

 

For the 30 weeks ended August 29, 2003, Dollar General total retail sales increased 13.3 percent to $3.7 billion from $3.3 billion in the same period a year ago.  Same-store sales for the 30 weeks increased 4.5 percent.  


September Sales Outlook

For the five-week September period ending October 3, 2003, the Company expects total sales to increase 12 to 14 percent. Same-store sales are expected to increase three to five percent compared with a same-store sales increase of 5.0 percent in the September period last year.  September sales results will be released on Thursday, October 9, 2003.
