Dollar General Literacy Foundation Awards More Than $5.8 Million to Approximately 720 Schools, Nonprofits and Literacy Organizations across the U.S.

Grants provide funding for adult, family and summer literacy programs; Pushes total impact to more than $100 million in donations and grants

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- This morning, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded more than $5.8 million in grants to support adult, family and summer literacy programs to approximately 720 schools, nonprofits and literacy organizations across the 43 states Dollar General (NYSE: DG) serves. Today’s grant announcements bring the total impact of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to more than $100 million in donations and grants to help nearly six million people improve their lives through literacy and education since the foundation’s inception in 1993.

Recipients of today’s grant announcements will use Dollar General Literacy Foundation funds to support programs aimed at enhancing summer, family and adult literacy programs. Grants will be used to help promote childhood summer reading or help adults learn to read, prepare for the high school equivalency exam or learn English. The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is also currently accepting applications for youth literacy grants through Thursday, May 21, 2015. Youth literacy grants provide funding to schools, public libraries and nonprofit organizations to help students below grade level or who experience difficulty reading by providing funding to implement new or expanding literacy programs, purchase new technology or equipment or purchase books, materials or software to enhance literacy programs.
