Major Retailer Donated $840,000 and Surprised 21 Schools Across the
Country
GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
This morning, Dollar General (NYSE: DG) will culminate the inaugural
year of its Reading Revolution program when representatives
surprise students, teachers and administration with a major donation of
$40,000 to support and enhance literacy at Odessa High School in Odessa,
Texas.
Odessa High School is the 21st school since October in which
Dollar General has launched a Reading Revolution and given
principals, librarians and media specialists a wonderful, unexpected
surprise to provide supplemental resources to assist in students’ future
successes. In total, Dollar General provided $840,000 in donations to
positively impact the education of nearly 14,000 students across the
country.
“Dollar General is very passionate about its mission of Serving
Others and commitment to improving lives through literacy and
education,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s Chairman and CEO. “We
hope these donations will help equip schools with the tools and
resources needed to improve students’ learning experiences and are
excited to see the impact these donations will make across the country.”
Rooted in Dollar General’s company mission of Serving Others and
reflective of its strong advocacy for literacy, the Reading Revolution
program provided the schools with $40,000 to use at their discretion to
enhance literacy and reading programs. Schools may use the funds to
purchase books, computers, tablets or other educational supplies that
best meet the unique needs of their student population.
Schools were chosen due to their close proximity to one of Dollar
General’s 12 distribution centers or near stores that were among the
company’s largest contributors to the Dollar General Literacy
Foundation’s Cash Cube program.
“By supporting each of these schools with $40,000, we hope to help
students become better readers, more successful students and lifelong
learners,” said Denine Torr, Dollar General’s director of community
initiatives.
